100 YEar Old Store
The building which houses the New Gloucester Village Store has served as a marketplace to New Gloucester for over 100 years.
Originally opened as Starbird and Bennet at the end of the Nineteenth century, the store was most notably the New Gloucester Farmer’s Union for the better part of the twentieth century.
During the 1970’s Peaco’s Market occupied the store as a food and hardware resource that was equipped with a pot-bellied stove in the middle which regulars were fond of congregating around. In 1980 the building became the Village Store, a quaint little convenience market whose charm became well known through Humpty Dumpty commercials filmed at the store.
The Village Store continued to operate until the end of the 1990’s, and thereafter opened and closed sporadically for a decade. During that time, the owner, Mike Brady, did considerable renovations, poured a new foundation, and generally fixed up a building that had fallen into disrepair.
In 2008 the building was bought by two local guys, Sam Coggeshall and Adam Coe, who installed a giant wood-fired brick oven and also opened up the whole first floor to commerce for the first time since the 1970’s. Now known as the New Gloucester Village Store, the building continues to serve as a market and rural meeting place.
